Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Bexley

Worried about falls, or finding the walk to the shops or the bus stop harder than it used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Bexley, from Sidcup and Welling to Erith and Crayford. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you get back to the things that fill a normal week here: a stroll round the lake in Danson Park, a morning on the Broadway in Bexleyheath, or a train into town to see family. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.

Homes in Bexley

Much of Bexley grew up as a suburb, so many people live in terraced houses and pairs of semis with a full flight of stairs, a step up to the front door and a garden path round the side. Old Bexley and parts of Crayford keep older village cottages with narrow, steep staircases. Erith has tower blocks from its town centre rebuild alongside newer flats by the river, and Thamesmead has its own estates of flats and houses with shared stairwells, landings and lifts. Having a physiotherapist who comes to your home means we can see the exact stairs, back step and garden you deal with every day. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home, and we practise the stairs and steps you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.

Where we visit in Bexley

We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Bexleyheath, Welling, Falconwood, Sidcup, Blackfen, Lamorbey, Albany Park, Old Bexley, Crayford, Barnehurst, Erith, Northumberland Heath, Slade Green, Belvedere and Thamesmead. That covers postcodes DA5, DA6, DA7, DA8, DA14, DA15, DA16, DA17 and DA18, and parts of DA1, SE2, SE9 and SE28. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.

Coming home from hospital

Many Bexley residents are treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich or Darent Valley Hospital near Dartford, with outpatient clinics at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.

Getting out and about again

Bexley has plenty of green space close to home: Danson Park and its lake between Welling and Bexleyheath, the gardens at Hall Place beside the River Cray, the open grass of Foots Cray Meadows, and the woods and abbey ruins at Lesnes, where the paths climb quite steeply. In the north, the Thames Path runs along the river past Erith, where Riverside Gardens and the long Erith Pier make a good level walk with benches along the way. For shopping, people head to the pedestrianised Broadway and the Broadway Shopping Centre in Bexleyheath, the markets and events on Sidcup High Street and in Welling, or the Riverside Shopping Centre in Erith. Crook Log, Sidcup and Erith leisure centres all have pools, and the Central Library in Bexleyheath is a regular stop for many. There is no Underground in Bexley, so most trips mean Southeastern trains from stations such as Sidcup, Bexley, Welling or Erith, the Elizabeth line from Abbey Wood just over the border, or the many buses that meet in Bexleyheath. Station steps, high bus kerbs and busy crossings on roads like the A2 are all things we can practise, step by step, on the routes you actually use, to help you feel steadier when you are out.

What a programme can look like

These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.

Example: a lap of Danson Park. Starting point: someone who used to walk round the lake most mornings but stopped after a fall on a wet path, and now only goes out by car. What we work on: leg strength, balance on grass and gravel, and building up the distance in short stages, with planned rests on the benches. The goal: a full lap of the lake again, at their own pace.

Example: the river at Erith. Starting point: someone who had a knee replacement and lives in a flat near the town centre, and misses sitting out on the pier. What we work on: bending and straightening the knee, getting on and off a bench, and walking further with the stick before swapping to no aid if that is safe. The goal: the walk to Riverside Gardens and along the pier without needing a lift.

Example: the train from Sidcup. Starting point: someone who came home after a broken hip and wants to visit family in central London again, but feels unsure on the station stairs and getting on and off the train. What we work on: stair practice with the rail, stamina for the walk to the station, and the step between platform and train. The goal: a day trip by train, with confidence.

Example: shopping on the Broadway. Starting point: someone who has become unsteady over the past year and now avoids the bus from Welling into Bexleyheath on market days. What we work on: balance when turning and stopping, carrying a shopping bag, and getting on and off the bus and staying steady as it moves off. The goal: a regular morning on the Broadway again.

Other areas we visit
