Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Brent

Worried about falls, or finding the walk to the shops, the station or the park harder than it used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Brent, from Kilburn and Willesden to Wembley and Kingsbury. This is home physiotherapy for older adults, built around the life you already have: a morning walk in Gladstone Park, a trip along Ealing Road, a visit to family across the borough. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you keep doing the things that matter to you. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.

Homes in Brent

Homes in Brent change a lot from one end of the borough to the other. In the south, around Kilburn, Queen's Park, Harlesden and Willesden, many people live in Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often split into flats with a steep shared staircase. Further north, in Kingsbury, Kenton, Preston and Sudbury, there are streets of interwar semis and short terraces, usually with a step up to the front door, a narrow staircase and a garden down a few steps at the back. Across Brent there are also council estates and blocks of flats, some newly rebuilt, where the lift, the communal doors and the walk across the estate are all part of getting out. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home and building. As a physiotherapist who comes to your home, we practise on the stairs, front steps and garden steps you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.

Where we visit in Brent

We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Kilburn, Queen's Park, Kensal Green, Harlesden, Willesden, Willesden Green, Dollis Hill, Neasden, Stonebridge, Alperton, Wembley, Wembley Park, Sudbury, Preston, Kenton, Kingsbury and Queensbury. That covers postcodes NW10, HA0 and HA9, and parts of NW2, NW6, NW9 and HA3. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.

Coming home from hospital

Many Brent residents are treated at Northwick Park Hospital, just over the border in Harrow, or at Central Middlesex Hospital in Park Royal, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.

Getting out and about again

Brent has more green space than people expect. Gladstone Park sits on the slope of Dollis Hill with long views back towards central London, Roundwood Park in Willesden has formal Victorian paths and flower beds, and Queen's Park is a short, level loop that suits a first walk out. In north Brent, Fryent Country Park and Barn Hill are open meadows and woodland with real hills, and the paths around the Welsh Harp reservoir are a favourite for a longer walk. For shopping and errands there are the high streets in Kilburn, Harlesden and Willesden Green, the shops along Ealing Road, and Wembley High Road. Libraries such as The Library at Willesden Green, Kingsbury Library and Wembley Library run groups and events, and Vale Farm Sports Centre and Willesden Sports Centre have pools and gyms. Neasden Temple is one of the borough's great landmarks, and big event days around Wembley Stadium can make pavements and stations very crowded. Getting about Brent usually means the Jubilee, Metropolitan or Bakerloo lines, the Overground, or buses along busy roads like the Harrow Road and Kilburn High Road. We practise these routes to help you feel steady: kerbs, crossings, slopes and getting on and off the bus, step by step, on the routes you actually use.

What a programme can look like

These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.

Example: back up the hill in Gladstone Park. Starting point: someone who used to walk to the top of Gladstone Park most mornings but stopped after a fall, because the slope now feels too steep. What we work on: leg strength, stamina and balance on slopes and grass, starting on the flatter lower paths and building up the climb together. The goal: the walk to the top of the park again, with rests where needed.

Example: shopping on Ealing Road. Starting point: someone who feels unsteady on busy pavements and has started asking family to do the shopping. What we work on: walking speed, turning and stopping in a crowd, carrying a bag, and the walk to and from the bus stop. The goal: a regular trip to the shops, at their own pace.

Example: stairs in a converted flat in Kilburn. Starting point: someone home after a hip replacement who lives in an upstairs flat with a long, steep staircase and no lift. What we work on: safe technique on the stairs with the rail, strength in the new hip, and confidence with the walking stick on the front steps. The goal: getting downstairs and out of the front door without help.

Example: a walk by the Welsh Harp. Starting point: someone with general unsteadiness who has lost confidence on uneven paths and stays close to home. What we work on: balance on gravel and grass, stepping over roots and kerbs, and building distance a little each week. The goal: a walk by the reservoir with a friend.
