Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Ealing

Worried about falls, or finding the walk to the Broadway, the park or the bus stop harder than it used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Ealing, from Acton and Hanwell to Southall, Greenford and Northolt. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you keep up the everyday things: a walk in Walpole Park, shopping in Ealing Broadway or on Southall Broadway, a stroll along the canal or a climb up Horsenden Hill. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.

Homes in Ealing

In the older southern parts of the borough, around Acton, Ealing and Hanwell, the streets are lined with Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many split into flats, with a few steps at the front and a steep staircase inside. Further north and west, in Greenford, Perivale and Northolt, much of the housing was built between the wars: semi detached and terraced family houses with front gardens, side paths and a step down into the back garden, alongside maisonettes and low rise council blocks. There are garden suburb streets such as Brentham, newer flats near the stations, and sheltered housing and bungalows dotted across the borough. With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, we work with these details as they really are. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home and building, and we practise the stairs, the front step and the step into the garden that you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.

Where we visit in Ealing

We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Ealing Broadway, West Ealing, South Ealing, Northfields, Pitshanger, Hanger Hill, Acton, North Acton, South Acton, Hanwell, Southall, Norwood Green, Greenford, Perivale and Northolt. That covers postcodes W3, W5, W7, W13, UB1, UB2, UB5 and UB6, and parts of W4. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.

Coming home from hospital

Many residents are treated at Ealing Hospital on the Uxbridge Road between Southall and Hanwell, and some in the south of the borough at West Middlesex University Hospital in Isleworth. They are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.

Getting out and about again

Ealing has more green space than most people expect. Walpole Park, with Pitzhanger Manor at its edge, is a flat and easy place to start walking again, and Ealing Common is right by the station. Hanwell has Brent Lodge Park, known locally as the Bunny Park, and the Grand Union Canal towpath past the Hanwell flight of locks, with the Wharncliffe Viaduct nearby. Acton Park is a local favourite, and Horsenden Hill above Perivale gives wide views for anyone ready for a climb. Town centres matter too: Ealing Broadway, West Ealing, Acton High Street, Southall Broadway with its market, and the shops in Greenford and Northolt. Many people use their local library, such as Ealing Central Library in the Broadway shopping centre, Hanwell or Pitshanger libraries, or exercise classes at the Everyone Active Acton Centre, Dormers Wells Leisure Centre or Northolt Leisure Centre.

Travel across the borough often means the Uxbridge Road, which runs right through it and is busy with buses. The Elizabeth line stops at Acton Main Line, Ealing Broadway, West Ealing, Hanwell and Southall; the Central line runs out through Hanger Lane, Perivale, Greenford and Northolt; and the District and Piccadilly lines serve Ealing Common, Acton Town, South Ealing and Northfields. Hanger Lane and the North Circular are hard to cross. We practise the bus stop, the platform and the walk to the shops, step by step, on the routes you actually use.

What a programme can look like

These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.

Example: the canal at Hanwell. Starting point: someone who used to walk the towpath past the locks but stopped after a fall, worried about the narrow path and the water's edge. What we work on: balance on narrow and uneven ground, leg strength, and confidence when cyclists pass, starting in Brent Lodge Park before moving to the canal. The goal: a regular walk along the Grand Union again.

Example: shopping on Southall Broadway. Starting point: someone who has had a knee replacement and finds the busy pavements and kerbs on market days tiring. What we work on: walking with a stick or trolley, stepping on and off kerbs, standing for longer and turning safely in a crowd. The goal: the weekly shop on the Broadway again.

Example: the garden step in a Greenford semi. Starting point: someone who is generally unsteady and has stopped going into the garden because of the step down from the back door. What we work on: strength, step practice with a rail, and balance on grass and paving. The goal: time in the garden every day.

Example: up Horsenden Hill. Starting point: someone home after a broken hip who used to walk up the hill with friends and now finds even the walk to the bus stop tiring. What we work on: stamina, strength on slopes, and building up from flat paths in Perivale Park to the lower slopes of the hill. The goal: reaching the top again for the view.

Other areas we visit

We also visit older adults at home in nearby Harrow, Brent, Hammersmith and Fulham, Hounslow and Hillingdon, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
