Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Hillingdon
Worried about falls, or finding a walk round Ruislip Lido, along the canal or into Uxbridge harder than it used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Hillingdon, from Northwood and Ruislip to Hayes and West Drayton. Hillingdon is one of the greenest parts of London, with woods, lakes and towpaths close to home, and we work on strength, balance and stamina to help you enjoy them and keep up with family, friends and local groups. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
Homes in Hillingdon
A lot of the north of the borough grew up along the Metropolitan line in the 1920s and 1930s, so Ruislip, Eastcote, Ickenham and Northwood are full of interwar semis, detached houses and chalet bungalows. Many have a step or two at the front door, a staircase with a turn, and a garden that slopes or has steps down from the patio. Bungalows are common too, which helps with stairs but not with the step out to the garden or the drive. Further south, in Hayes, Yeading, Yiewsley and West Drayton, there are terraces, council estates and blocks of flats, some being rebuilt around Hayes town centre, as well as newer flats near the stations. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home and building. As a physiotherapist who comes to your home, we practise the stairs, steps and garden paths you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.
Where we visit in Hillingdon

Coming home from hospital
Many Hillingdon residents are treated at Hillingdon Hospital on Pield Heath Road in Uxbridge, or at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
Much of the borough is Green Belt, so a good walk is rarely far away. Ruislip Lido has a sandy beach and paths around the water, with Ruislip Woods right beside it. The Grand Union Canal towpath runs through Uxbridge, Cowley, Yiewsley and Hayes, and is mostly flat, which makes it a useful place to build up distance. Further north, the Colne Valley around Harefield has lakes and open countryside. Closer to home there are Hillingdon Court Park, Fassnidge Park in Uxbridge and Barra Hall Park in Hayes. Manor Farm in Ruislip is a historic site with a library and grounds to walk around, and the Battle of Britain Bunker in Uxbridge is a popular visit with family. For shopping there are Uxbridge town centre, the High Streets in Ruislip, Northwood and Eastcote, and Hayes town centre. Libraries such as Uxbridge, Ruislip Manor, Eastcote and Botwell Green run groups and events, and Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex has indoor and outdoor pools. Getting around usually means the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines to Uxbridge, the Central line at West Ruislip and South Ruislip, the Elizabeth line at Hayes and Harlington or West Drayton, and buses on busy roads near the A40 and Heathrow. We practise these routes to help you feel steady on kerbs, crossings, platforms and bus steps, step by step, on the routes you actually use.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: around Ruislip Lido. Starting point: someone who loved walking around the Lido with their dog but stopped after a fall on a woodland path. What we work on: balance on sand, gravel and roots, walking while holding a lead, and building distance week by week. The goal: a walk around the Lido again.
Example: the canal towpath at Cowley. Starting point: someone with general unsteadiness who feels nervous walking near water and has stopped going out alone. What we work on: walking on narrow paths, looking around while walking, passing cyclists safely, and stamina for a longer walk. The goal: a regular walk along the canal.
Example: home from Hillingdon Hospital after a broken hip. Starting point: someone home after a broken hip, living in a bungalow with a step down to the garden and a sloping drive. What we work on: strength and balance, walking with a frame and then a stick, and the step and slope outside. The goal: getting out to the garden and the car without help.
Example: shopping in Uxbridge. Starting point: someone home after a knee replacement who misses taking the tube into Uxbridge for shopping and lunch. What we work on: knee strength, walking speed, stairs at the station, and getting on and off the train. The goal: a trip into Uxbridge town centre again.
Other areas we visit
We also visit older adults at home in nearby Ealing, Harrow and Hounslow, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
