Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Westminster
Worried about falls, or finding busy streets and long walks harder than they used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Westminster, from Marylebone and Mayfair to Belgravia and Pimlico. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you keep up a busy social life: the theatre, the galleries, events and walks in the Royal Parks. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
"The people I see in Westminster want to keep their social life going: an evening at the theatre, an exhibition, a walk in the park with friends. That is what we work towards." Daniel Arias Ruiz, Chartered Physiotherapist
Homes in Westminster
Most people in Westminster live in flats: purpose-built blocks, period mansion blocks, and Georgian or Victorian townhouses converted into apartments, often on several floors with no lift. Others live in townhouses spread over many floors. Even with a lift, there are steps at the entrance, stairs inside the home, and the walk from the front door to a busy street. With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, every visit starts with how you get around your own home and building, and we practise the stairs and steps you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.
Where we visit in Westminster
We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Marylebone, Mayfair, St James's, Soho, Covent Garden, the Strand, Westminster, Victoria, Belgravia, Pimlico, Paddington, Bayswater, Maida Vale, Little Venice and St John's Wood. That covers postcodes SW1, W1, W2 and W9, and parts of NW1, NW8 and WC2. There is no travel charge anywhere in London. We also visit nearby Camden and the City of London.
Coming home from hospital
Many Westminster residents are treated at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington or St Thomas' Hospital, just across Westminster Bridge, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
The goal is usually getting back to a full social life: a show in the West End, an exhibition at the National Gallery, Tate Britain or the Royal Academy, dinner with friends in Soho or Covent Garden, events and evenings out, or a walk in Hyde Park, Regent's Park, St James's Park or Green Park. Westminster's pavements are some of the busiest in London, so we also work on reactive balance: steadying yourself if someone bumps into you in a crowd. We practise the walk to the station or the bus, and through busy places like Victoria, Paddington and Charing Cross, step by step, on the routes you actually use.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: back to the West End. Starting point: someone who loves the theatre but has stopped going because of the crowds outside and the steep steps inside older theatres. What we work on: reactive balance in crowds, steps with and without a handrail, and the walk from the station. The goal: an evening at the theatre again.
Example: a walk in the Royal Parks. Starting point: someone who walked in Hyde Park every week but stopped after a fall, because the distance and uneven paths now feel too much. What we work on: stamina, leg strength and balance on different surfaces, building up the distance together in the park. The goal: a regular walk in the park again.
Example: a day at the galleries. Starting point: someone who loves exhibitions but now finds the long galleries, the standing and the grand front steps tiring. What we work on: standing balance, stamina and pacing, and steps with a handrail. The goal: enjoying a full exhibition again.
Example: dinner in Soho. Starting point: someone who feels anxious on crowded pavements and has stopped meeting friends in Soho. What we work on: walking in busy places, reactive balance in case someone bumps into them, and confidence on kerbs and crossings. The goal: evenings out with friends again.
Other areas we visit
We also visit older adults at home in nearby Kensington and Chelsea, Brent, Camden, Lambeth, Wandsworth and the City of London, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
