Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Camden

Worried about falls, or finding the hills and stairs harder than they used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Camden, from Hampstead to Bloomsbury. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you stay independent at home and keep getting out to the heath, the parks and the places you love. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.

"I have walked with so many people on Hampstead Heath and up Primrose Hill. Getting back to a regular walk in the park, with some fresh air, is often what matters most to them." Daniel Arias Ruiz, Chartered Physiotherapist

Hills, stairs and homes in Camden

Camden is hilly. From Hampstead and Highgate down to Kentish Town and Camden Town, almost every walk has a slope, and many homes are tall houses with several floors, front steps and basement stairs. To stay independent, you need to manage the stairs inside your home and the hills outside it. With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, every visit starts with how you get around your own home and street, and we practise the stairs and slopes you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.

Where we visit in Camden

We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Hampstead, Belsize Park, Primrose Hill, Highgate, Gospel Oak, Kentish Town, Camden Town, Swiss Cottage, West Hampstead, Somers Town, King's Cross, Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia and Holborn. That covers postcodes NW1, NW3, NW5 and WC1, and parts of N6, N19, NW2, NW6, NW8, W1T and WC2. There is no travel charge anywhere in London. We also visit nearby Islington, Haringey and the City of London.

Coming home from hospital

Many Camden residents are treated at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead or University College Hospital on Euston Road, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance, the stairs at home and the hills outside. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.

Getting out and about again

The goal is usually getting back out: a regular walk on Hampstead Heath, up Primrose Hill or in nearby Regent's Park, a visit to the British Museum, the British Library or the Wellcome Collection, a stroll round Camden Market, lunch or shopping around Russell Square, Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road, or a train from King's Cross, St Pancras or Euston. We build up your walking distance and confidence on hills, busy pavements and station concourses, step by step, on the routes you actually use.

What a programme can look like

These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.

Example: back on the heath. Starting point: someone who walked on Hampstead Heath every week but stopped after a fall, because the slopes and uneven paths now feel unsafe. What we work on: leg strength and balance, walking on slopes and uneven ground, and building up the distance together on the heath itself. The goal: a regular walk on the heath again.

Example: up Primrose Hill. Starting point: someone home after a hip replacement who misses the walk up Primrose Hill to the view. What we work on: stamina, walking with the right aid, and the hill itself a section at a time, with places to rest. The goal: reaching the top and enjoying the view again.

Example: a day at the British Museum. Starting point: someone who loves the museums in Bloomsbury but now finds the front steps, the big galleries and the walk from the station too tiring. What we work on: stamina and balance, steps with a handrail, and pacing a longer day out. The goal: a full visit to the museum again.

Example: catching a train from King's Cross. Starting point: someone who wants to visit family by train but is worried about the long walk through a busy station. What we work on: walking distance and speed, balance in crowds, and getting on and off the train. The goal: travelling by train again.

Other areas we visit

We also visit older adults at home in nearby Westminster, Brent, Barnet, Haringey, Islington and the City of London, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
