Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Sutton
Worried about falls, or finding the walk along the High Street or round the park more tiring than it used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Sutton, from Cheam and Worcester Park to Carshalton and Wallington. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you keep up the everyday things you enjoy here: feeding the ducks at Carshalton Ponds, a walk across Nonsuch Park, or a morning at the library and the shops. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
Homes in Sutton
Much of Sutton is quiet suburban streets of semis and terraces built between the wars, especially around Cheam, North Cheam and Worcester Park, usually with one flight of stairs and a back door onto the garden. The St Helier estate, built in the 1930s as a cottage estate, has rows of small brick houses with front and back gardens and short, steep staircases. Carshalton and Sutton town have older Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the town centre has a growing number of flats, some reached by a lift and some only by stairs. Hackbridge is home to the BedZED eco village alongside newer blocks by the River Wandle. Having a physiotherapist who comes to your home means we can look at your own front step, stairs and garden. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home, and we practise the stairs and steps you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.
Where we visit in Sutton
We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Sutton town, Cheam, North Cheam, Belmont, Worcester Park, Sutton Common, Benhilton, Rosehill, St Helier, The Wrythe, Carshalton, Carshalton Beeches, Wallington, Beddington and Hackbridge. That covers postcodes SM1, SM2, SM3, SM5 and SM6, and parts of SM4, KT4 and CR0. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.
Coming home from hospital
Many Sutton residents are treated at St Helier Hospital on Wrythe Lane in Carshalton, run by Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, and some at the trust's other site, Epsom Hospital. They are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
Sutton has a lot of green space for its size. Nonsuch Park stretches along the western edge by Cheam, Oaks Park sits in the south with its wide lawns and woodland, and Manor Park is a short walk from the town centre. Carshalton village has its ponds, Grove Park and Honeywood Museum, while Beddington Park, with Carew Manor and St Mary's Church, is a flat and open place to build up distance. Cheam Village has Whitehall, one of the oldest houses in the area, and a small high street of its own. Sutton High Street is pedestrianised for most of its length, with the St Nicholas Centre and Times Square, and runs from the station at one end up to Angel Hill at the other. Sutton Central Library runs regular groups, and local leisure centres offer swimming and classes. There is no Underground here: people use trains from Sutton, Cheam, Carshalton, Wallington, Belmont and Hackbridge, the trams at Beddington Lane and Therapia Lane, and buses along busy roads like the A217. We practise kerbs, crossings and the walk to your nearest stop, step by step, on the routes you actually use, to help you get out with more confidence.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: round Carshalton Ponds. Starting point: someone who lives nearby and used to walk to the ponds and the village cafe most days, but stopped after a fall on the kerb and now feels nervous crossing the road. What we work on: balance stepping up and down kerbs, walking speed for crossings, and stamina for the round trip. The goal: the daily walk to the ponds again.
Example: the High Street from the station. Starting point: someone who had a hip replacement and wants to get back to the train and the shops, but finds the length of the High Street and the slope tiring. What we work on: hip strength, walking further with fewer rests, and managing the station stairs. The goal: a morning in town, arriving by train.
Example: a St Helier garden. Starting point: someone in a cottage house on the estate who came home after a broken hip and cannot yet manage the back step and the narrow stairs at night. What we work on: stair practice, the step into the garden, and getting up from a low chair. The goal: moving around the house and garden without help.
Example: Nonsuch Park with the grandchildren. Starting point: someone in Cheam who has become unsteady over time and no longer feels safe on the grass and gravel paths when the family visits. What we work on: balance on uneven ground, reacting to small trips, and walking a little further each week. The goal: an afternoon in the park with the grandchildren.
Other areas we visit
We also visit older adults at home in nearby Croydon, Merton and Kingston upon Thames, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
