Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Islington
Worried about falls, or finding the stairs at home harder than they used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Islington, from Angel to Archway. We work on strength, balance and confidence to help you keep using every floor of your home and keep getting out to the places you enjoy. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
"Islington homes are tall and full of stairs, and the streets are busy, with cobbles in places. Most of the people I see want to stay in the home they love and keep going to the theatre, the shops on Upper Street or the football." Daniel Arias Ruiz, Chartered Physiotherapist
Homes in Islington
Many Islington homes are tall Georgian and Victorian houses with several floors and no lift. To stay independent at home, you need to manage the stairs safely, often several flights a day: to the bedroom, the bathroom and the kitchen. Outside, there are front steps, basement stairs and cobbled streets. With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, every visit starts with how you get around your own home, and much of our work is practising those stairs, at a pace that is safe for you.
Where we visit in Islington
We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Angel, Barnsbury, Canonbury, Highbury, Holloway, Upper Holloway, Archway, Tufnell Park, Finsbury Park, Clerkenwell and the Islington side of King's Cross. That covers postcodes N1, N5, N7 and N19, and parts of N4, N6, EC1R and EC1V. There is no travel charge anywhere in London. We also visit nearby Hackney, the City of London and Haringey.
Coming home from hospital
Many Islington residents are treated at the Whittington in Archway or at University College Hospital, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs in your home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
The goal is usually getting back out: a show or a ballet at Sadler's Wells, dinner or shopping on Upper Street, Chapel Market, Angel Central, a walk on Highbury Fields or along the Regent's Canal, or an Arsenal game at the Emirates Stadium. Islington has plenty of buses and stations, so we also practise the walk to the bus stop or station, getting on and off the bus, and managing busy pavements and cobbles. We build up your walking distance step by step on the routes you actually use.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: stairs in a tall house. Starting point: someone who now lives on one floor because the stairs feel unsafe. What we work on: leg strength and balance, practising the stairs together a flight at a time, and advising on handrails or other equipment where it would help. The goal: using every floor of their home again.
Example: back to the ballet. Starting point: someone who loves the ballet at Sadler's Wells but has stopped going because the journey and the theatre steps feel too much. What we work on: stamina and balance, the walk to the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and steps with a handrail. The goal: an evening at the theatre again.
Example: back to the football. Starting point: someone who has watched Arsenal for years but now finds the crowds, the walk to the stadium and the stand steps too much. What we work on: walking distance, balance in busy places, and steps without a rail. The goal: watching a game at the Emirates Stadium again.
Other areas we visit
We also visit older adults at home in nearby Camden, Haringey, Hackney and the City of London, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
