Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Hounslow

Worried about falls, or finding the walk into town, round the park or along the river harder than it used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Hounslow, from Chiswick and Brentford to Feltham and Bedfont. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you get back to local life: a coffee on Chiswick High Road, the shops in Hounslow town centre, a walk round Osterley Park or along the Thames at Strand on the Green. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.

Homes in Hounslow

Homes change a lot from east to west. Chiswick and parts of Isleworth have Victorian and Edwardian terraces and larger period houses, often with steep stairs and steps up to the door. Across Hounslow, Heston, Feltham and Hanworth there are streets of semi detached and terraced family houses, many with a porch step, a narrow staircase and a back garden reached through the kitchen. There are council estates and low rise flats throughout, and in Brentford a growing number of new apartment blocks by the river and the Great West Road, where lifts help but the walk from the flat to the street can still be long. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home and building, and we practise the stairs, porch step and garden path you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you. With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, practice happens where you need it.

Where we visit in Hounslow

We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Chiswick, Turnham Green, Gunnersbury, Strand on the Green, Brentford, Isleworth, Old Isleworth, Osterley, Spring Grove, Lampton, Hounslow, Hounslow West, Heston, Cranford, Feltham, Hanworth and Bedfont. That covers postcodes W4, TW3, TW4, TW5, TW7, TW8, TW13 and TW14, and parts of W3, W5, W6 and TW1. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.

Coming home from hospital

Many residents are treated at West Middlesex University Hospital on Twickenham Road in Isleworth, run by the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and some in the east of the borough at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith. They are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.

Getting out and about again

Osterley Park, Syon Park, Gunnersbury Park and the gardens of Chiswick House all have long, mostly flat paths, while Boston Manor Park, Lampton Park and Hanworth Park are good for shorter local walks. Hounslow Heath and Bedfont Lakes Country Park are wilder, and Crane Park follows the river towards Twickenham. On the Thames, the riverside walk at Strand on the Green runs past old houses and pubs just downstream of Kew Bridge. For everyday errands there is Chiswick High Road, Hounslow High Street, Feltham town centre and Brentford, and many people use their local library in Chiswick, Hounslow, Feltham or Isleworth, or the pools and classes at Heston Pools and Fitness, New Chiswick Pool, Isleworth Leisure Centre or Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre.

The land here is mostly flat, but distances are long and the main roads are wide and fast, especially the Great West Road, the A4 and the junctions around Gillette Corner. The Piccadilly line runs through Boston Manor, Osterley and the three Hounslow stations, the District line stops at Gunnersbury, and trains from Waterloo stop at Chiswick, Kew Bridge, Brentford, Syon Lane, Isleworth, Hounslow and Feltham. We practise the walk to the stop, crossing wide roads and getting on and off the bus, step by step, on the routes you actually use.

What a programme can look like

These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.

Example: a loop of Osterley Park. Starting point: someone who walked round the lake at Osterley every weekend but stopped after a fall, because the distance now feels too much. What we work on: stamina, leg strength and balance on gravel and grass, building up the distance together with planned rests on benches. The goal: the full walk round the park again.

Example: the river at Strand on the Green. Starting point: someone who has had a hip replacement and wants to get back to meeting a friend at a riverside pub, but feels unsure on the narrow, uneven path. What we work on: walking with their stick on uneven paving, stepping up and down kerbs, and confidence when others pass. The goal: the walk along the river and lunch with a friend.

Example: the bus into Hounslow. Starting point: someone who is generally unsteady and has stopped catching the bus into town because of the step on and the jolt when it pulls away. What we work on: balance when standing and sitting quickly, stepping on and off, and walking around a busy high street. The goal: shopping in Hounslow on their own again.

Example: a semi in Feltham. Starting point: someone home after a broken hip who is struggling with the porch step and the stairs to the bathroom. What we work on: strength, a safe technique on the stairs with the rail, and practising the front step with shopping. The goal: managing the house without help.

Other areas we visit

We also visit older adults at home in nearby Richmond upon Thames, Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing and Hillingdon, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
