Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Kingston upon Thames
Worried about falls, or finding the riverside walk or a trip round the market more tiring than it used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Kingston upon Thames, from Kingston town and Surbiton to New Malden and Chessington. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you enjoy what the borough has to offer: a stroll along the Thames from Canbury Gardens, lunch by the Ancient Market Place, or a play at the Rose Theatre. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
Homes in Kingston upon Thames
Homes across the borough range from grand Victorian townhouses and Art Deco blocks of flats in Surbiton to large Victorian and Edwardian family houses in Norbiton, and newer flats along the river in the town centre. New Malden, Tolworth, Hook and Chessington are mostly 20th century estates of semis and terraces, with a flight of stairs and a garden at the back. Norbiton also has the Cambridge Road estate, where older blocks are being replaced with new homes, and Kingston Hill and Coombe have bigger houses on sloping plots. Whether you have a lift to a riverside flat or a tall staircase in a period house, a physiotherapist who comes to your home can see exactly what you deal with every day. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home, and we practise the stairs and steps you actually use, including the step out to the garden or balcony, at a pace that is safe for you.
Where we visit in Kingston upon Thames
We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Kingston town, Canbury, Kingston Hill, Coombe, Norbiton, Surbiton, Berrylands, Tolworth, Hook, Chessington, Malden Rushett, New Malden, Old Malden, Motspur Park and Kingston Vale. Coming home from hospital
Most Kingston residents are treated at Kingston Hospital on Galsworthy Road, run by Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust, with some outpatient care at Surbiton Health Centre, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
The river is at the heart of the borough. Canbury Gardens runs along the Thames north of the town centre, and Queen's Promenade carries on south towards Surbiton, mostly level and with benches to stop on. The Hogsmill river has a walking route from the Thames out towards Tolworth, and Tolworth Court Farm Fields offer quieter grassland. Fairfield Recreation Ground near the town centre, Alexandra Recreation Ground in Surbiton and Beverley Park in New Malden are good places to build up distance, and Richmond Park is close by through Kingston Gate. In town, the Ancient Market Place is open seven days a week, with All Saints Church and the Coronation Stone close by, and the Bentall Centre is next door. Surbiton and New Malden each have their own high street, and the Malden Centre, Tolworth Recreation Centre and The King's Centre in Chessington run sport and activities. There is no Underground in the borough: people travel by South Western Railway from stations such as Kingston, Surbiton, Norbiton, New Malden, Tolworth and Chessington, and by bus from the two bus stations in town. Kingston Hill and Coombe Hill are steep, and busy crossings on the town centre ring road and the A3 need care, so we practise these step by step, on the routes you actually use, to help you feel steadier on your feet.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: the Thames to Surbiton. Starting point: someone who lived by the river and walked the Queen's Promenade most days, but stopped after a fall near the water and now stays indoors. What we work on: walking stamina, balance on the riverside paths and slopes, and getting up from a bench. The goal: the walk along the river to Surbiton and back.
Example: the market and the Bentall Centre. Starting point: someone in Norbiton who had a hip replacement and wants to get back to shopping in town, but finds the bus, the crowds and carrying bags tiring. What we work on: hip strength, walking in busy places, and getting on and off the bus. The goal: a regular morning in the town centre.
Example: the train from Surbiton. Starting point: someone who came home after a broken hip and wants to take the train to visit friends, but is unsure on the station stairs and the gap onto the train. What we work on: stair practice with a rail, stamina for the walk to the station, and stepping on and off. The goal: train trips again, starting with a short journey.
Example: a garden in New Malden. Starting point: someone who has become unsteady and has stopped going down the garden step to look after their roses. What we work on: step practice, balance while reaching and bending, and getting up from kneeling. The goal: tending the garden again.
