Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Newham
Worried about falls, or finding busy stations, market crowds and long walks harder than they used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Newham, from Stratford and Forest Gate to East Ham and the Royal Docks. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you keep up everyday life: shopping at Queen's Market or along Green Street, a walk in West Ham Park, a trip to Westfield, or visiting family across east London. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
Homes in Newham
In East Ham, Forest Gate and Manor Park, many people live in Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses on long, tree lined streets. In Canning Town and Custom House, council estates replaced homes lost in the war, and many of the tower blocks built in the 1960s have since been taken down or replaced with new homes. Around Stratford, the Olympic Park and the Royal Docks there are newer blocks of flats, many of them high rise. A terrace usually means a step up from the pavement, a staircase inside, and a small yard or garden at the back. A flat might mean a lift, a long corridor and communal stairs for when the lift is out. With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, we can see exactly what you face each day. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home and building, and we practise the stairs and steps you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.
Where we visit in Newham
We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Stratford, Maryland, Forest Gate, Manor Park, Little Ilford, East Ham, Upton Park, Plaistow, West Ham, Canning Town, Custom House, Beckton, Silvertown, North Woolwich and the Royal Docks. That covers postcodes E6, E7, E12, E13, E15 and E16, and parts of E3, E20 and IG11. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.
Coming home from hospital
Many Newham residents are treated at Newham Hospital in Plaistow or The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
Local life here is busy and spread out. People want to get back to Queen's Market and the shops on Green Street, East Ham High Street, the Stratford Centre and Westfield Stratford City, a show at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, or the libraries at Stratford, East Ham, Forest Gate and Green Street. Some want to swim again at Newham Leisure Centre or East Ham Leisure Centre. For green space there are the ornamental gardens in West Ham Park, Central Park in East Ham, Plashet Park, Beckton District Park, the riverside gardens of Thames Barrier Park, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and the Greenway, a long path for walkers and cyclists on top of the old Northern Outfall Sewer. Getting around usually means Stratford, one of London's busiest stations, with the Jubilee and Central lines, the DLR, the Elizabeth line and the Overground. The DLR runs right across the Royal Docks, the District and Hammersmith & City lines stop at Plaistow, Upton Park and East Ham, and the Elizabeth line stops at Forest Gate, Manor Park, Maryland and Custom House. We work on escalators, lifts, long station walkways and busy crossings, step by step, on the routes you actually use, to help you travel with more confidence.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: back to Queen's Market. Starting point: someone who shopped at Queen's Market every week but stopped after a fall, because the crowds and carrying heavy bags felt unsafe. What we work on: leg and grip strength, balance when people pass close by, walking with a shopping trolley, and the walk from Upton Park station. The goal: the weekly market shop again.
Example: walking the Greenway. Starting point: someone who used to walk a stretch of the Greenway most mornings but has felt generally unsteady and stopped going. What we work on: balance on a long straight path shared with cyclists, stepping aside safely, building up distance, and the ramps and steps on and off the path. The goal: a regular morning walk again.
Example: the DLR to the Royal Docks. Starting point: someone who enjoyed visiting the waterside at Royal Victoria Dock and Thames Barrier Park with family but now worries about the stairs and lifts at DLR stations. What we work on: stamina, stairs, standing balance on a moving train, and walking on paving and gravel by the water. The goal: days out by the river again.
Example: home to East Ham after a broken hip. Starting point: someone home from hospital after a broken hip, living in a terraced house with a step at the front and the bathroom upstairs. What we work on: the stairs and the front step, using the walking aid safely in a narrow hallway, getting on and off the toilet and bed, and the first short walks outside. The goal: moving safely around the house and out to the local shops.
Other areas we visit
