Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Bromley

Worried about falls, or finding that country walks and trips into town take more out of you than they used to? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Bromley, from Beckenham and Penge to Orpington and Biggin Hill. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you keep doing the things that matter locally: a walk in the woods at Petts Wood or High Elms, a show at the Churchill Theatre, or coffee with friends on the High Street. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.

Homes in Bromley

This is London's largest borough and one of its greenest, and the homes are just as varied. Beckenham and the streets around Bromley town have large Victorian and Edwardian houses, many now split into flats, while Penge and Anerley have long rows of terraces. Petts Wood was built as a garden suburb in the 1920s and 1930s, with mock Tudor houses and semis, and that interwar pattern repeats across Orpington, Hayes and West Wickham. Further south, villages such as Downe, Keston and Biggin Hill sit among farmland and woods, where homes often have long drives, uneven garden paths and steps down to the garden. With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, every visit starts with how you get around your own home, and we practise the stairs and steps you actually use, from a steep Victorian staircase to the back step onto the patio, at a pace that is safe for you.

Where we visit in Bromley

We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Bromley town, Shortlands, Bickley, Beckenham, Penge, Anerley, Hayes, West Wickham, Chislehurst, Petts Wood, Orpington, St Mary Cray, Farnborough, Keston, Biggin Hill and Mottingham. That covers postcodes BR1, BR2, BR3, BR4, BR5, BR6, BR7 and SE20, and parts of SE9, SE19, TN14 and TN16. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.

Coming home from hospital

Many Bromley residents are treated at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, run by King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.

Getting out and about again

With so much open land, getting back outside is often the main goal. There is Kelsey Park in Beckenham, Norman Park on Bromley Common, Jubilee Country Park by Petts Wood, Priory Gardens in Orpington, Hayes Common, and the woodland walks at High Elms near Farnborough. Crystal Palace Park, with its famous dinosaur sculptures, sits at the north western tip, and Charles Darwin's home at Down House is a favourite day out in Downe. In Bromley town, the pedestrianised High Street, The Glades and the charter market draw people in several days a week, and Beckenham, Orpington, Chislehurst and Petts Wood each have their own high streets. The Pavilion, Walnuts in Orpington, the Spa at Beckenham and West Wickham Leisure Centre all have pools, and the libraries host groups and talks. There is no Underground in the borough, so people rely on trains from Bromley South, Bromley North, Orpington, Chislehurst and Beckenham Junction, the tram from Beckenham Junction, Birkbeck and Elmers End towards Croydon, and buses on busy roads such as the A21. Grass verges, country lanes without pavements and woodland paths need different skills from a town centre, so we practise each one step by step, on the routes you actually use, to help you feel steadier wherever you are walking.

What a programme can look like

These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.

Example: woodland walks again. Starting point: someone who walked in Jubilee Country Park with friends every week but stopped after a fall on a muddy path, and now stays on pavements. What we work on: balance on soft and uneven ground, ankle and hip strength, and how to use walking poles or a stick on slopes. The goal: rejoining the weekly walk through the woods.

Example: the tram from Beckenham. Starting point: someone who had a hip replacement and used to take the tram to see family in Croydon, but feels wobbly stepping on and standing while it moves. What we work on: hip strength, standing balance with and without a hand hold, and the walk to the stop. The goal: tram trips to see the family again.

Example: a Saturday in Bromley town. Starting point: someone who has become generally unsteady and now finds the crowds on the High Street and around The Glades on market days too much. What we work on: walking speed, turning and stopping safely in a crowd, and stamina for a longer morning out. The goal: a regular trip into town, with a sit down for lunch.

Example: a village garden. Starting point: someone in a cottage near Biggin Hill who came home after a broken hip and cannot yet manage the steps and sloping lawn to reach the vegetable beds. What we work on: step practice, getting down to kneel and back up again, and balance while carrying tools. The goal: back out in the garden for the growing season.

Other areas we visit

We also visit older adults at home in nearby Bexley, Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth and Croydon, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
