Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Hackney
Worried about falls, or finding the stairs at home harder than they used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Hackney. We look at balance, strength and walking, and at the home itself, then work on the everyday things that matter to you, using your own furniture and routines. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
"Before SteadyMotion, I worked in community rehabilitation in Hackney, visiting people at home. I helped people get back to the shops, the bus, work and their place of worship." Daniel Arias Ruiz, Chartered Physiotherapist
Homes in Hackney
With a physiotherapist who comes to your home, every visit starts with how you get in, out and around your home.
In Hackney that often means a flat several floors up, steps outside the front door, or an estate where the lift is the easiest way down. A common worry we hear is getting stuck at home when the lift is out of order, so much of our work is practising stairs safely, so you are not relying on the lift to get out.
Where we visit in Hackney
We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Dalston, Stoke Newington, Clapton, Homerton, Hackney Central, Hackney Wick, Hoxton, Haggerston, De Beauvoir, Shoreditch and Stamford Hill. That covers postcodes E5, E8, E9 and N16, and parts of E2, N1, N4, E20, EC1V and EC2A. Living near the border with Islington, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest? We visit there too, and you can see our page for the City of London. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.
Hackney is home to people from all over the world. Daniel has worked with clients from many cultures and faiths, including the borough's large Turkish and Jewish communities, and visits are arranged around what matters to you.
Coming home from hospital
Many people in Hackney come home from Homerton University Hospital or another London hospital and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends.
Daniel, our physiotherapist, worked in community rehabilitation in Hackney before starting SteadyMotion, visiting people at home after a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement. That work looks like practising with your walking aid, exercises to keep your joints moving and build strength, balance work, and making sure you can manage everyday tasks and move safely around your home. Where equipment would help, we advise on what you need and how to use it, and refer you to council services where needed. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
The goal is usually getting back out: to work, to the shops, the post office, Ridley Road Market, your mosque, synagogue or church, appointments at Homerton University Hospital or St Leonard's in Hoxton, or a walk in London Fields, Hackney Downs, Clissold Park, Victoria Park or along the Regent's Canal. We build up your stamina, balance and confidence step by step and practise the routes you actually use, including walking to the bus stop and getting on and off the bus. Where it matters to you, we also practise getting down to the floor and back up again, for example to kneel and pray.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: stairs when the lift is unreliable. Starting point: someone in an upper floor flat who has stopped going out because the stairs feel unsafe and the lift keeps breaking down. What we work on: leg strength and balance, practising a few steps at a time together and building up to a full flight, and choosing the right walking aid for outside. The goal: getting down to the street and out to the shops or the market again.
Example: getting back to work by bus. Starting point: someone whose balance and stamina have dropped, so the walk to the bus stop no longer feels safe. What we work on: balance and stamina, walking a little further each week, and practising getting on and off the bus. The goal: travelling to work again.
Example: getting back to a place of worship. Starting point: someone who has stopped going to their mosque, church or synagogue because the walk and kneeling feel too hard. What we work on: walking safely with a stick, building up the distance, and practising getting down to the floor and back up again. The goal: walking there and praying as they used to.
