Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Lambeth
Worried about falls, or finding the hills and the busy high roads harder than they used to be? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Lambeth, from Waterloo and Kennington to Brixton and Streatham. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you get back to the parts of local life you miss, whether that is a walk across Clapham Common, a coffee in Brixton Village, or a concert on the South Bank. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
Homes in Lambeth
Many Lambeth homes are in large council estates, from low rise blocks to tall towers, in places such as Brixton, Stockwell and Tulse Hill. Big Victorian villas in Brixton, Clapham and Kennington have mostly been turned into flats, often with a flight of steps up to the front door and more stairs inside. Along Streatham High Road there are 1930s blocks of flats, and the side streets of Streatham and West Norwood have family houses with narrow halls and steep stairs. Around Vauxhall and Waterloo, newer apartment blocks rely on lifts and long corridors. Every visit starts with how you get around your own home, from the front steps to the bathroom. As a physiotherapist who comes to your home, we practise the stairs and steps you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.
Where we visit in Lambeth
We offer physiotherapy home visits across the borough, including Waterloo, the South Bank, Kennington, Vauxhall, Oval, Stockwell, Clapham, Clapham Park, Brixton, Brixton Hill, Herne Hill, Tulse Hill, West Norwood, Gipsy Hill, Streatham and Streatham Hill. That covers postcodes SE11, SE27, SW2, SW4, SW8, SW9 and SW16, and parts of SE1, SE5, SE19, SE21, SE24 and SW12. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.
Coming home from hospital
Many Lambeth residents are treated at St Thomas' Hospital on the river opposite Parliament, or at King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill, and are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
Lambeth has a lot of open space to get back to: Brockwell Park with its walled garden and the café at Brockwell Hall, Clapham Common, Kennington Park, Ruskin Park, and Streatham Common with the Rookery gardens. Others want to return to Brixton Market, the shops on Streatham High Road, a film at the Ritzy, or a walk along the river past the London Eye and the Southbank Centre. Libraries such as Brixton Tate Library on Windrush Square, the Carnegie Library in Herne Hill and Streatham Library, and leisure centres including Clapham Leisure Centre, Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre and Brockwell Lido, are good places to keep active. The Victoria line stops at Brixton, Stockwell and Vauxhall, and the Northern line at Clapham, Stockwell, Oval and Kennington, but further south most trips are by bus or train from Streatham, Tulse Hill or West Norwood. The south of the borough is hilly, with Brixton Hill, Streatham Hill, Knights Hill and Gipsy Hill all steep climbs. We practise the walk to the stop or station, the hills and the busy crossings, step by step, on the routes you actually use.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: up the hill in Brockwell Park. Starting point: someone who used to walk up to Brockwell Hall for a cup of tea but has avoided the slope since a fall. What we work on: leg strength, stamina for walking uphill and balance on the way back down, starting on the flatter paths and working up the hill. The goal: tea at the top of the park again.
Example: Brixton Market shopping. Starting point: someone who has shopped in Brixton Market for years but now feels unsteady among the crowds and carrying heavy bags home on the bus. What we work on: balance in busy places, carrying shopping, and getting on and off the bus safely. The goal: the weekly shop in Brixton again.
Example: the steps of a converted house. Starting point: someone in a top floor flat in a Kennington conversion, nervous about the outside steps and the stairs inside since coming home after a broken hip. What we work on: strength, stair practice with the rail and the walking aid, and a safe plan for carrying things up. The goal: going out each day without worrying about the stairs.
Example: Streatham Common walks. Starting point: someone who walked on Streatham Common every morning and has felt generally unsteady on the grass and uneven paths. What we work on: balance on uneven ground, walking stamina and confidence on the slope towards the Rookery. The goal: a morning walk on the common and a sit in the gardens.
Other areas we visit
We also visit older adults at home in nearby Westminster, Southwark, Wandsworth, Merton, Croydon and Bromley, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
