Falls prevention physiotherapy at home in Redbridge
Worried about falls, or finding the Central line stairs, the High Road or a walk in the park harder than before? A Chartered Physiotherapist, registered with the HCPC, visits older adults at home across Redbridge, from Ilford and Seven Kings to Woodford and Hainault. We work on strength, balance and stamina to help you keep enjoying local life: a stroll through Valentines Park, shopping at The Exchange, a game of bowls, or a lakeside walk at Fairlop Waters. Every programme starts with a falls risk assessment at home.
Homes in Redbridge
Homes here vary a lot from one neighbourhood to the next. Around Ilford, Seven Kings and Goodmayes there are long streets of terraced houses from the Victorian era and the 1920s. Clayhall is mostly semi detached houses with gardens, while central Ilford has many flats, from small blocks to some of the tallest towers in east London. Hainault was built after the war by the London County Council as a cottage estate of houses, and the southern edge of the borough takes in part of the Becontree estate. Whether it is a staircase to the bedroom, a front step onto a busy pavement, a garden with a step down to the lawn, or a lift and a long corridor, every visit from a physiotherapist who comes to your home starts with how you get around it. We practise the stairs and steps you actually use, at a pace that is safe for you.

That covers postcodes IG1, IG2, IG3, IG4, IG5, IG6 and E18, and parts of E11, E12, IG7, IG8 and RM6. There is no travel charge anywhere in London.
Coming home from hospital
Many Redbridge residents are treated at King George Hospital in Goodmayes or Queen's Hospital in Romford, and people in Wanstead and Woodford often go to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone. They are then supported by NHS community teams. SteadyMotion is an independent private service, separate from the NHS, so we can work alongside your NHS care, while you wait for it, or after it ends. After a fall, a broken hip, or a hip or knee replacement, we work on your walking aid, strength, balance and the stairs at home. Read more in our guide to home physiotherapy for older adults.
Getting out and about again
Getting out might mean the ornamental gardens and bowling green in Valentines Park, a look round Valentines Mansion, or the library and Redbridge Museum at the Central Library in Ilford. It might mean a show at the Kenneth More Theatre, shopping along Ilford High Road and in The Exchange, or a swim or gym session at Wanstead Leisure Centre or Mayfield Leisure Centre. For longer walks there is Wanstead Park with its ornamental waters and the Temple, the step free paths around the lake at Fairlop Waters, the woods at Claybury, Hainault Forest Country Park, and the Roding Valley Way between Woodford and Ilford. Travel around Redbridge usually means the Central line, whose Hainault loop runs through Gants Hill, Newbury Park, Barkingside and Hainault, or the Elizabeth line from Ilford, Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Chadwell Heath. Busy junctions like the Gants Hill roundabout take careful crossing. We practise the walk to the station or bus stop, the escalators and stairs, and the crossings, step by step, on the routes you actually use, to help you get about with more confidence.
What a programme can look like
These are examples, not real clients. Every programme is planned around the person and what they want to get back to.
Example: back on the bowling green. Starting point: someone who played bowls in Valentines Park for years but gave up after a fall, because bending to deliver the bowl and walking the green felt unsafe. What we work on: leg strength, balance while stepping and bending forward, and stamina to stay on their feet for a full game. The goal: a regular game of bowls with friends again.
Example: the Elizabeth line into Ilford. Starting point: someone in Seven Kings who used to take the train into Ilford for shopping but now finds the station and the crowds on the High Road unsettling. What we work on: walking speed and stamina, balance when stopping and turning, stairs and lifts at the station, and steadying yourself on a moving train. The goal: the trip to Ilford and The Exchange again.
Example: home to Clayhall after a knee replacement. Starting point: someone home after a knee replacement, finding the stairs and the step into the back garden hard. What we work on: bending and straightening the knee, stair practice with a rail, walking without the frame around the house, and the garden step. The goal: managing the house and garden without help.
Example: a walk around Fairlop Waters. Starting point: someone who has become generally unsteady and stopped walking their usual loop by the lake. What we work on: balance on gravel and grass, building up distance a little at a time, and resting safely on benches on the way. The goal: the full walk around the lake again.
Other areas we visit
We also visit older adults at home in nearby Waltham Forest, Newham, Barking and Dagenham and Havering, and across the rest of London, with no travel charge.
